Hallway before renovation
Hallway with polished wooden floor and white painted wooden doors

This home was built in 1891 is an icon of Takapuna with a connection to the original Takapuna Pumphouse engineer Frank Moren. It has been owned by the same family for 128 years!

The interior of the home had been divided into 2 separate flats. The new owners decided to restore it into 1 spectacular home. With the exterior showcasing the craftsmanship of yesteryear the interior was adorned with 6 original fireplaces and beautiful vaulted ceilings that needed the attention to detail that the house painters team could provide.

CEILINGS

The board and batten ceilings throughout the home while beautiful were very time consuming to prepare and paint. Every inch of these ceilings were painstakingly sanded and then the entire length of the battens were meticulously siliconed to ensure any gaps disappeared. For ultimate protection, the ceilings received a full coat of undercoat with specific mould inhibitors followed by 2 coats of Dulux Flat ceiling paint.

  • Cleaned all surfaces using sugar soap.
  • Sanded and filled all surfaces to ensure a suitable surface for painting.
  • Applied 1 full coat of Dulux Primer Sealer Undercoat.
  • Apply 2 Full Top Coats of Dulux Ceiling in Vivid White.

WALLS

Converting the flats back into one home required extensive building work. To achieve a finish to the standard required the walls were plastered and every surface received a full sealer undercoat.

The walls were painted using Dulux Wash&Wear +Plus Anti-Bac. On all our interior painting projects we believe that if you are going to invest in painting then you should use the best product available. We use Dulux Wash&Wear +Plus Anti-Bac for the following reasons:

Dulux Wash&Wear +Plus Anti-Bac is a washable paint that has been developed to resist the growth of bacteria and mould on walls, which may trigger asthma and allergy symptoms. Containing 101 Barrier Technology, it creates a hard-wearing finish that allows most common marks, scuffs and stains to be easily wiped away with a wet cloth.

  • Cleaned all surfaces using sugar soap.
  • Sanded and filled all surfaces to ensure a suitable surface for painting.
  • Applied 1 full coat of Dulux Primer Sealer Undercoat.
  • Apply 2 Full Top Coats using Dulux Wash&Wear +Plus Anti-Bac in colour Dannevirke.

DOORS, SKIRTINGS & WINDOWS

The windows, doors, door frames and skirtings were all challenged with our modern-day sanders to remove the 128 years of built-up paint. Hand sanding was then undertaken on sections and running our hands over the prepared surface we ensured that they were smooth.

The next stage was to prime the entire surface to ensure maximum bond for the topcoats. All window panes received a specialist adhesion primer. Filling, and siliconing were then undertaken, followed by more sanding and then the priming of the filler. Once this was all completed the entire site was vacuumed and we proceeded to apply the topcoats using Dulux Aquanamel.

On this interior painting project, we were working around builders and other tradespeople and we were very conscious to ensure that we minimised dust using our specialist extraction systems.

FIREPLACE SURROUNDS

On the lower level of the home, there were 6 individual chimneys. 5 were prepared and painted while one in the dining room was completely stripped back and varnished making a spectacular focus of this room.

THE FINISH

Following the painting, the wooden floors were varnished and the interior painting project was complete. It is hard to imagine the home before painting as the transformation is stunning and seamless. Each room was meticulously prepared, painted and restored. The fireplaces in each room echo a world from 128 years ago but through quality workmanship and paint technology, the house painters have transformed this home for the modern world. It was truly a pleasure to work on this piece of Takapuna history.
